Jonestown [Jonestown]
an agricultural community in ↑Guyana established in 1977 for a US religious group called the People’s Temple of the Disciples of Christ by its leader Jim Jones (1933–78). After US Congressman Leo Ryan and four people with him were murdered while visiting Jonestown in 1978, Jones ordered the members of his community to kill themselves with a drink that contained poison. All 913 died, including more than 240 children, and Jones shot himself.
